China is currently seeing an increase in the amount of people who choose to travel there as tourists. The country has always been stunningly beautiful, but social and political issues have put many travelers off seeing the country in all its glory. Today, China isn’t perfect, but it’s more modern, vibrant and tourist friendly than ever, which means you can truly have the time of your life there.
Although there are literally thousands of great experiences to be had in China, which is why so many people book a China tour guide for their trip, I’d put a wager on these being the best places to visit if you want to have a great time and get a true representation of what China is about:
The Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was home to the China’s emperors and their advisors for more than half a millennium, and no one who was not in their prestigious circle was allowed to enter. However, the amazing Beijing attraction is now open to anyone who wishes to explore the 980 buildings that make up the settlement. So vast is the site that many visitors pack a lunch and spend the whole day exploring, and even then, they probably don’t get to see the whole city in its magnificent glory!
Potala Palace
If you want to see terrific Tibetan architecture, take a trip to Potala Palace, and you won’t be disappointed. Once the home of numerous Dalai Lamas, the Palace is over 13 stories high, offering impressive views of the surrounding area. Unfortunately, only a small number of visitors are permitted entry each day, so you will need to book early if you want to fit this fabulous attraction in.
Leshan Giant Buddha
The Leshan Giant Buddha is an awe-inspiring site whether you’re a devoted Buddhist or not. The 223-foot-high statue is the largest depiction of Buddha on the planet, and thanks to the rolling river that rushes by its feet, it is one of the most impressive sights you will ever be lucky enough to see.
The Hanging Temple
China is filled with beautiful temples that show off some of Asia’s most impressive and ancient architecture, but undoubtedly the most impressive of them all is the Hanging Temple located 4 hours outside of Beijing. Suspended 100 feet (ca. 30 m) over a valley, the temple’s buildings are interconnected by a number of wooden pathways that offer unbeatable views of the surrounding countryside.
Yungang Grottoes
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is close to the Hanging Temple, so combining a day trip to the two is never a bad idea. The grottoes, which comprise of many caves carved into the cliffs, are home to around 50,000 Buddha statues, so it’s not surprising that it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the whole of China.
The Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army is open of the world’s most brilliant and unusual tourist sites. Found in 1974, the attraction features thousands of soldiers, horses, chariots and officers – all in life-size. It’s a great place to take pictures and an unforgettable experience.
